The
Arts and Crafts Movment of Webcasting
Pay attention to the minor details to improve streaming
by Stephen Schleicher
I
am a big fan of the Arts and Crafts movement that was popular in the
United States of America from the 1870’s-1930’s. There is something
nice about the simple yet detailed style of the furniture and architecture
of the time. By giving the same attention to detail in creating a webcast,
you can perfect your style of streaming video.

Stranger
in a Strange Land
How a 'quick trip' to the Apple Store left me considerably lighter
in the wallet
by Kevin Schmitt
Since there are only a smattering of Apple-branded stores strewn across
this great land of ours, I imagine that a good many of you out there have
not had the opportunity to actually set foot inside of one. Oh, I'm sure
you've seen pictures or heard stories, some of which have grown to mythic
proportions. "Steve Jobs personally mans the cash register at every store!"
"They have 400,000 software titles just for the Mac there!"

Digital
Abstract Expressionism
A conversation with artist Jean Detheux
by David Nagel
Somewhere
in a small village on a small farm in a rather remote part of eastern
Canada, there lives an artist with his family. I'm still not entirely
clear on exactly where he lives—somewhere roughly between Montréal and
Toronto—but I am sure that there isn't regular mail service and that when
foul weather hits I don't hear from him for a week or so, as preparations
have to be made for taking care of the food, most of which he and his
family grow themselves.

What's
the Big Deal About Digital Content Copyright Protection?
It's a more difficult issue than it might seem
by Guillaume Mazieres
In
talking to people at trade shows, user conferences and in channel partner
stores, there are a few common questions that are always raised: "When
is writable/rewritable DVD going to be cheap enough for me to use at home?"
"Is Hollywood raising all of the copyright stink just to make sure I can't
copy their movies?" "When will it be possible for me to copy movies?"
"When are they going to finalize all of the DVD copyright issues?"

IEEE
1394 Making Strides in Tough Climate Says In-Stat
35 million PC-based and Consumer Electronics Products Now Equipped
With IEEE 1394
Already a staple in many PC models and peripherals, the IEEE 1394 high-speed
digital interface is making gains in consumer electronics markets, according
to Cahners In-Stat Group. In 2000, over 35 million PC-based and consumer
electronics products were equipped with IEEE 1394, and the high-tech market
research firm projects that number will exceed 200 million by 2005.

OS
X for Designers
Is it time to make the switch?
by David Nagel
If you're anything like me, you were out early Saturday morning—despite
the throbbing pain in your head and the cottony taste in your mouth—rushing
to the nearest computer retailer to pick up the latest release of Mac
OS X, version 10.1. I know that not all of you are Mac psychofanatics
and that a pretty decent-sized chunk of you don't even use a Mac at all.
Nevertheless, Mac users do make up significantly more than half of the
the total users in this particular creative space, so the question of
switching is a relevant one.

Windows
XP:
A Polished XPerience
by Charlie White
Windows
XP now ventures out into the world, and we’ve been running it through
its paces here at Digital Media Net’s Midwest Test Facility. We’ve been
following XP’s development since its first Betas, and now that we have
our hands on the shipping code, we’ve gone all-out to see if it’s something
that would be helpful to digital content creators. We installed it on
three desktop machines and a notebook, then edited video with it, and
put it through every trial and tribulation we could muster. What’s our
verdict?
