Last Stand?
PVR Software Developer Struggles
By Charlie White
Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) have ridden the wave of PC innovation
and plummeting costs over the past few years. Fueled by lower prices
for large, fast and quiet hard drives and cheap MPEG-2 technology, what
would have cost $20,000 five years ago can now be bought for a mere
$199. But the boxes haven’t caught on with the American public at the
rapid rate analysts predicted last year.

Microtek
ScanMaker 4600
42-bit flatbed desktop scanner
by J.V. Bolkan
Consumer-level scanners should be inexpensive, easy-to-use and versatile
and should provide decent quality. The Microtek ScanMaker 4600 gets at
least passing grades in all these areas, with much better than average
scores in quality and versatility.

AC—Final
Voyage
The Project Studio Part VIII
by JD Mars
What's a project studio guy to do? I have to build a vocal booth if I'm
to do any kind of live overdubs. Obviously, I'll never have enough real
estate bandwidth to do live drums or a band, so vocal or solo instrument
overdubs are the most I can do. I could leave the AC wall unit exposed
to the room, and put some kind of fan that draws air from the main room
into the vocal booth, but I'd still have some noise issues. So, rigging
something up with the wall unit may be the only road I can take.

Cut Pro 2.0 and Cleaner
A quick solution to luminance issues
by Stephen Schleicher
I have recently become addicted to Final Cut Pro as my editing software
of choice. I can't believe how simple yet powerful this $1,000 package
is. From my recent post projects, I have discovered that this NLE does
everything I need it to do and more. In some of the other NLE systems
I have worked with, I was constantly sending stuff out to After Effects
for graphic treatments. Not so in FCP, as I can have a practically unlimited
amount of video layers to mix and layer graphics quickly and easily.

Vertical
Offset
Part 1 of how to make an AutoLISP program
by Jos van Doorn
A vertical offset can be found in an isometric piping drawing. Vertical
pipes normally go straight down. They have an angle of 90 degrees to the
horizon. Sometimes in a vertical line there is a pipe that's not under
an angle of 90 degrees. What we then have is called a vertical offset.

The
Costs of Censorship
by Charlie White
Censorship. It's always directed at someone else. Here's a variation
on an old saying: Don't censor him, don't censor me. Censor that fellow
behind the tree! Editors, unite! Let's let The Real World show its sometimes-ugly
face. Who knows -- we may just be able to enlighten our entire society.

ReelSmart Motion Blur and FieldsKit
Interlacing and motion blur plugins for editing and compositing systems
by Kevin Schmitt
This
week we're going to start taking a gander at RE:Vision Effects' suite
of video and effects plugins by doing two, two, two reviews in one. Why
double up? Well, According to RE:Vision Effects' own literature, "ReelSmart
FieldsKit is a great companion to other ReelSmart modules such as Twixtor
and Motion Blur," so we're going to see how that claim measures up by
using the After Effects versions of FieldsKit and Motion Blur in tandem.

The
Maya Factor
A Q&A with Alias|Wavefront Ambassador and Cofounder Mark Sylvester
by David Nagel
It arrived like a prophecy people only half believed would ever be fulfilled.
Maya for OS X. Its advent marked a significant turning point for the platform
and cast a definitive vote of confidence for Mac OS X. There's been a
lot of hype surrounding the event, not just from Alias|Wavefront, but
from users and even from Apple itself, as in keynote after keynote Apple
CEO Steve Jobs praised Maya as nothing less than the greatest application
of technology since Moses used his 0 MHz PowerStaff™ 1300 to part the
Red Sea.

Take
a Shortcut
Getting around Adobe InDesign the quick way!
by Deke McClelland
There's one sure way to tell if someone is a "power user" of any application:
whether or not they make use of keyboard shortcuts. In this clip from
"Total InDesign," Deke McClelland demonstrates how InDesign gives you
the ability to edit the built-in keyboard shortcuts. He begins by pointing
out the fact that the "Edit Shortcuts" command under InDesign's Edit menu
is lacking a keyboard shortcut itself.

Prodigal Mac
Find
Balance, Grasshopper
Or, how to avoid a bloody nose
by Kevin Schmitt
When I was little (and, admittedly, even today), I always looked forward
to New Shoe Day!, a day so great, it must be capitalized and end with
an exclamation point, even in the middle of a sentence. Picking out just
the right shoe; the feel of the Brannock device against your sock-clad
foot (yes, that metal thing they use to measure your shoe size does have
a name); the agony of those rare times when they didn't have the right
size; the ecstasy as you wore your spankin' new shoes out of the store,
old ones already forgotten in the box under your mom's arm. There was
nothing in the world like New Shoe Day!
