GE Medical Systems Finds a Creative Way to Outsource Its Video Production
by Charlie White
If you're working in corporate video these days, the possibility of layoffs
lurks in the background. With the current economic slowdown breathing
down the necks of corporate America, video departments are likely to be
the first victims of the budget ax. But instead of shutting down corporate
video departments, many large companies are creating more efficient ways
to produce their video presentations.

of the last couple of weeks. Microsoft, discreet, Media 100, HP, Compaq,
big news that can leave one scrambling to check their portfolio, their
hardware, and maybe even their own job. A wild ride for sure, are you

A plea for creativity in the computer lab
by David Nagel
There are few things that affect your life as powerfully as your first
child heading off to her first day of kindergarten. It's a time for reflecting
upon one's own mortality, of envisioning one's child for the first time
as a self-sufficient entity and of pondering the future in a completely
new light. In short, it's a life-changing event.

Creating
a True 3D Space with After Effects
by Marcio Oliveira
In this tutorial, we will create a spaceship flying through a 3D space.
A "low polygon" spaceship. Are you familiar with those real-time 3D games?
That's what we're gonna do. You are probably asking yourself, "Why would
I do that in After Effects?" Well, now that AE5 has some 3D features,
let's use them.

CGI Artists Find New Creative Opportunities in Video Games
by Scott Lehane
Long ago, the studios mastered the art of generating auxiliary revenues
from their creative properties – everything from toys, t-shirts, board games
and comic books, to TV spin offs and fan clubs. Nowadays, it is the video
game market that has emerged as one of the driving forces in this area,
and this summer’s release of Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider
demonstrates that it flows both ways. |

Even if I am doing a high res. image 200dpi or higher, the text still
looks pixelated. This has just occurred recently. I have never had this
problem before. It is also happening to me in Illustrator 9 with the save

Subject: Quicksilver
200mp and Matrox RT Mac Card Problem
I have a problem occurring having installed the Matrox RT MAC card in
our new Quicksilver DP 800. I'm using 2.02 for FCP, have updated the firmware
of Matrox to 1.1 and have used the latest drivers from Matrox for the
software itself. The message I get is that the board is missing or not
seated correctly, but I've checked both of these factors - they seem fine
(It's definitely not missing!). Any divas out there likely to hazard a
guess of the cause or perhaps a solution? All help appreciated.

Subject: Volumetric
Lights & Missing Alpha Data
A newbie to LW6.5b, I recently rendered a scene for compositing in AE5.
The objects all had proper alpha, including animated transparency, but
the volumetric lights didn't seem to contribute any alpha data (blackness).
When I render, I'm rendering to either the Animation codec (Millions+)
or the Avid 9.04 codec (Millions+). Is there a difference in how the alpha
data is rendered (save animation vs. save alpha)? Or is there a switch
I haven't flipped yet?
